Film Club Activity

PDM also has archive of hundreds of documentary films and short films in sixteen categories like wildlife, birds, biodiversity of lakes, rivers, wetlands and oceans, forest, nature, environment, water, land and agriculture, sustainable development, energy, solid waste management, sanitation, climate change eco-friendly festivals, pollution (air, water, sound, e-waste, radiation-health food pollution), animation films, people and poverty in hindi, marathi and english. These films are screened during film festivals, awareness talks in schools, colleges, in PDM offices etc. These films are collected by organising film festivals every year.

1. Vasundhara short film competition of three days is one such major film festival that is a joint effort of PDM and MPCB (Maharashtra Pollution Control Board) organised every year since 2008. PDM has named this Film Festival as Apla Paryavaran LaghupatMahotsav. Every year films from professional and amateur category are screened at YashwantraoChavan, Nariman Point or RavindraNatyaMandir, Dadar. This festival is attended by the participating filmmakers, students and nature lovers. Guidance and help is also provided to make environmental short films. It is inaugurated by Chief Minister, State Ministers and other dignitaries of MPCB also attend inauguration ceremony. Winners are felicitated by cash prize, trophies and certificates and local newspapers cover this event. Many institutions, people have participated in these film festivals. Eight Film festivals were conducted from the past eight years.

2. Since 2009 a huge film festival of three days for school students is arranged at GadkariRangaytan, Thane since 2009. Every year the theme of the festival changes and around 6,000 students attend it and is always a huge success. This year the theme was solid waste management, water conservation, last year it was wildlife before that birds. Every year films from CMS Vatavaran (Environment and Wildlife Film Festival, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi) are added to the film archives. PDM is also associated with Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) from the past sixteen years and have multiple films of this organisation in its archives.

3. Kaushalya Hospital, Thane had provided their auditorium in the year 2013 for film festival which would be organised on second Saturday of every month.

4. PDM (Kalyan and Dombivali branch) have conducted two film festivals from the past two years with the support of Rotary Club, Inner Wheel and Kalyan Mahila Mandal.

5. PDM organised a film festival at Aarey Colony to promote the message of Save Aarey, which was a joint effort with the Save Aarey team at Goregaon. The films from PDM archives were screened for local Aarey crowd and students from various schools, which got an excellent response.

Eco- Friendly Festivals

Holi with Natural Colours:

Workshops, lectures and programmes to teach people to make natural colours with easily available household materials are conducted. Emphasis is also made to avoid burning large holikas by cutting trees, instead people are encouraged to use dry twigs and leaves fallen on the ground.

Green Ganesha

Different aspects of the festivals like idol making with clay and paper pulp, colouring of idols with water colours, decoration with paper, reduction in height of idols and encouraging immersion in artificial tanks, is propagated under this banner in different schools, colleges, societies and even corporate places.

Noise & Pollution free Diwali:

Bursting crackers during Diwali is most popular amongst children. Thus creating awareness amongst school children about the ill-effects of crackers mainly with respect to noise and air, is the purpose of PDM team. Students are also involved in actual noise monitoring using suitable systems.

Last two years we are celebrating Gudhipadva(Hindu new year) by pollution free Sky lanterns instead of crackers. Everybody is now copying this new way of celebration.

Rakshabandhan-vrukshbandhan:

This is a symbolic act to adapt trees in one’s vicinity and know more about them. Very popular in schools, children make rakhis out of bio-degradable natural waste material and tie it to trees in their school campus.

We organise many Environmental Awareness workshops on different topics related to environment. Lectures as well practicals by Eminent Faculties in the Environment field.

Nisarg Mela – World Wild Life Day

‘Nisargamela’ is arranged to spread awareness about wildlife. Students learn various things about nature, environment through various games, competitions etc. This programme is being conducted for last 10 years. Efforts are being made to conduct such NisargMelas in places outside Thane.

MahaSuryakumbha was a partnering activity of PDM with Keshav Shrushti. It is a ‘Solar Cooking’ activity to educate & create awareness about “Solar Energy”. Maha-suryakumbh also received recognition from Guinness World Records, Limca Book of Records, Asia Book and India Book of records. Paryavaran Dakshata Mandal spreads awareness about solar energy by using this solar cooker as a teaching aid. This year Paryavaran Dakshata Mandal reached around 20000 students & nearby 85 schools in Thane district.

Bio Resource Research Centre (BRC)

Bio Resource Research Centre (BRC)- Mamnoli- 2011 In Mamnoli, a centre for research in conservation of seeds, trees and medicinal plants is established. To conserve rural environment and forests is the motto of this centre. Various employment options for farmers like organic farming, vermi composting, nursery management, gardening etc. are suggested through workshops. BRC also sells plants like Vala, Pachouli, medicinal plants and indigenous species for afforestation projects. This centre is in Mamnoli village on Kalyan Murbad Road in Thane Dist.

Nisarga Environment Research Project

Nisarga- Environmental Research Project- 2006 Environmental Science is multidisciplinary. ‘Nisarga’ is an initiative to encourage and motivate young students to take up research projects in Nature and Environment. Technical and financial assistance along with expert guidance is provided.

Learning

workshop conducted by Enviro- Vigil under green career courses on last Sunday, 20th of March, 2016. This workshop facilitated by Mr. Bharat Godambe of PDM. He explained the concept of Kandi-Kolsa and gave information about Sarai Cooker (model developed by ARTI). He displayed the working model of SARAI COOKER to the participants. He demonstrated the process of making Charcoal from Bio-degradable waste. He shown how to assemble Sarai Cooker and gave cooking instructions on it. Simultaneously he placed rice, daal and mix sprouted grams in the Sarai Cooker for 45 minutes. Shilpa Mangal Prakash Shirvadkar showed short film on Kandi Kolasa and how to used sarai cooker at home. After 45 minutes food was completely cooked and it was ready to eat. After film session all participants were tasted the delicious food in that cooker.
All 14 participants were enjoyed this innovative workshop.
