Jalsaksharta: Wells

Jalsaksharta project creates awareness about the importance of water, uses of water and water conservation. Awareness programmes with different groups to encourage people to set up rain water harvesting plants in their localities, waste water recycling plants are conducted by PDM. Conservation of wells at Kalyan is also one of the important aspects of Jalsaksharta.

In order to preserve the wells that can be life-saving during drought, Paryavaran Dakshata Mandal has taken up the initiative to revive the wells in Kalyan. For this, the Kalyan village area has been fenced off and 82 wells have been recorded. Many of these wells are 50 to 70 feet deep and the water in them is still clean. These wells, which are living sources of groundwater, have been neglected due to taps in every household. Some of the wells that were used for drinking water even 10 to 20 years ago have been covered with slabs due to lack of space. Interestingly, water from some of these wells is supplied by tankers to drought-stricken areas of the city and for construction purposes. The option of supplying water from a well in a nearby area is easier and more sustainable for everyone.

As a part of an awareness program under Jalsaksharta, Paryavaran Dakshata Mandal conducted a program on Wells of Kalyan on 16th June 2024. Dr. Ghanshyam Amte, a senior researcher and Well researcher from Kalyan, presented the scientific approach to the study of wells. He insisted that just as the air quality table is published, the water quality table of wells should be published at least every three months and work should be done to reduce heavy metals in water and make it fit for use, and efforts should be made to increase the amount of dissolved oxygen in water. Wells are a part of
biodiversity. Dr. Ghanshyam Amte opined that the revival of wells will also help in

maintaining biodiversity. The next phase of this project will include the collection of water samples and testing them in reputed laboratories for further advancements.
